Before embarking on the sacred pilgrimage of Hajj, it is essential to understand the three types of Hajj — each with its own method, intention, and set of rituals. Knowing the difference helps every pilgrim perform their worship with clarity, sincerity, and devotion.
Hajj Tamattu (The Interrupted Hajj)
Hajj Tamattu is the most commonly performed type, especially among pilgrims traveling from India and other distant countries.
In this type, the pilgrim first performs Umrah during the Hajj season, entering Ihram for Umrah only. After completing Umrah, the pilgrim removes the Ihram and resumes normal activities.
On the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah, the pilgrim once again enters Ihram, this time with the intention for Hajj, and performs all the required rites.
- Qurbani (sacrifice) is obligatory for those performing Hajj Tamattu.
Hajj Ifrad (The Isolated Hajj)
In Hajj Ifrad, the pilgrim makes the intention for Hajj only, without combining it with Umrah.
He or she enters Ihram solely for Hajj, remains in it until the completion of all rites, and may perform Umrah later if desired.
- Qurbani is not obligatory in this type but may be offered voluntarily.
Hajj Qiran (The Combined Hajj)
Hajj Qiran is performed with a single intention for both Hajj and Umrah together.
The pilgrim enters Ihram once, performs Tawaf and Sa’ee for Umrah, but does not trim or shave the hair. The pilgrim stays in Ihram until both Hajj and Umrah are completed.
- Qurbani is obligatory for those performing Hajj Qiran.
Perform with Knowledge and Intention
Each type of Hajj carries its own virtue, reward, and ease. Choose the one that best suits your circumstances, health, and means. Perform it with pure intention (Niyyah) and complete devotion, and may Allah accept your Hajj and grant you forgiveness, mercy, and Jannah.
